Talking with adult children about inheritance without a row

Money conversations can feel awkward. A structured meeting with clear boundaries keeps the focus on wishes, not scores.

Family walking together along a coastal path

Parents often delay inheritance talks because they fear conflict. Adult children sometimes avoid the subject because they do not want to appear grasping. The result is silence until illness or a house sale forces a rushed discussion.

A facilitated family wealth conversation sets a simple agenda: what you hope to achieve, what is already decided, and which topics remain open. We keep legal drafting out of the room so the meeting stays about intentions rather than clause wording.

Useful ground rules include speaking in turn, naming gifts already made, and separating emotional attachments to a family home from the financial plan. Mild disagreement is normal; the aim is clarity, not unanimous applause.

Afterwards, everyone leaves with a short written note of what was agreed and what still needs solicitor or accountant input. That alone prevents months of second-guessing.
